Ο Ρουμί ήταν Πέρσης μυστικιστής ποιητής και θεολόγος και γεννήθηκε στο Αφγανιστάν,συγκεκριμένα στη πόλη Balkh στο Χορασάν και έζησε στο Ικόνιο όπου βρίσκεται ο τάφος του.Το πραγματικό του όνομα είναι Molana Jalal-eldin Mohamad Balkhi.
